In this piece... a bit like a Cantata, the story of Hansel and Gretel is retold in Rhyme and Song by a Narrator and Choir interspersed with musical interludes. The first song is set in the dark and ominous woods where poor Hansel and Gretel are lost and the music and song reflects their dilemna. The joy of the children when they find the house made of gingerbread and decorated with sweets is clear in the next swung song with lyrics which paint a lovely picture such as 'The trees were made of candy floss and the flowers were Quality Street.' The story continues with the song 'Nibble Nibble' where the children first meet the witch in disguise and then things become a bit maniacal with 'Fatten up the Boy' but all is resolved when Gretel outwits the witch and 'As the witch checked the oven Gretel pushed her right in, Her screams echoed through the trees, a blood curdling din!' The last song has the same tune as 'The Gingerbread House' jovial music and tells how the children found their way home to their father again and lived happily ever after. This was performed by local choirs with the 'Hertford Symphony Orchestra' in June 2024 and went down really well with the audience. Hope you like it too:)
